Looking for a great/professional tax preparer in the area that can assist preparing personal filings expeditiously and reasonably priced.

Would like to avoid the well marketed (H&R, JHew, etc.).

Thanks for the leads!

If this is just a simple personal return, you don't want a great professional preparer at all. They are too expensive for your purposes. What you want is exactly what the chain services offer. Reasonably competent people who can prepare an acceptable return for cheap.

We used to use a CPA, and it was in the hundreds of dollars for a simple federal and state return--plus I found dealing with the CPA frustrating. I'd write out a list of what I thought were our deductable expenses, asking for an explanation if I was wrong on any of them--and I would hear nothing. Then they would lose things and tell me I hadn't sent them. And the CPA himself doesn't do the return. (This is true of every CPA I've used or spoken with.)

TurboTax is super-easy, and it explains in simple language all the deducations and the reasons behind why you might not be eligible for a particular one. Total cost to us was around $100, including e-file and the fee charged by a secondary authorized pay site to put what we owed the IRS on our credit card.

I kick myself for all money we spent using a CPA over the years.

Bob, I hope you're reading this!

I use Reeder & Reeder CPA's and they are great. Well I see Michael Reeder and he is really good. For the last few years I've had quite the difficult returns and he was able to do them with no difficulty and fast. I'm quite the problem child when it comes tax returns. I was referred by my uncle and now have referred my father, and he loved him as well. To me he is not cheap, but then again I don't know how much any other CPA charges, but I usually have a lot of forms and pages. He's located in Fairfax Station, 703-690-0256
