I currently live in the NW quadrant of Washington, DC in the U Street neighborhood. My work office is relocating to Reston, VA this summer.

Is the commute from DC to Reston okay or is it not so good? I'm wondering whether I will need to relocate or not. If I do move, it wouldn't be all the way out to Reston, but I'd look for somewhere in between like Falls Church.

Any info is appreciated

1 hr in the morning, and 1.5 hrs to go home.

I commute to Reston from Arlington and I think its fine but I think from your area would be pushing it.

What time are you going to be leaving?

66 to 267 Toll Road is your issue. When you are on 267 it is easy. Going home on the other hand.. will be not as nice.

If only there was a magical silver bullet that could slay the commute from these regions to the very popular employment centers of western and dulles corridor. A man can wish

This by the way is about the 8th thread this month about a person who could gain a benefit from having the silver line for a reverse commute (something that the traffic numbers and anticipated ridership numbers thought was going to be negligible). Just saying, when silver line does start running its going to have 2-way decent traffic, till then enjoy paying the same price (toll road/gas) for a lesser experience (driving)

About 25 miles one-way of commuting distance using I-66 and the Dulles Toll Road. You'll be going against traffic, but I use the word "against" very lightly. There's no such thing as "light traffic" during rush hour in the DC area......"lighter"....but not "light".....it's all relative. Can you stomach a 50-mile round trip commute? Do you own or rent? Is a short drive to work worth more to you than being in the U-street social corridor?

Lots of things to consider.

66/267 isn't the only option. With a tip of the hat to The Flying Nun, another one would be crosstown to P Street, then Rock Creek Parkway south to the TR Bridge, then the GW Parkway to 123-South to the right on Lewinsville Road to Route-7 West to the left on Baron Cameron (Route 606).

Keep in mind that the Wiehle Avenue station is not within convenient walking distance of all of Reston. Will there be buses to all sorts of places? Of course, but that's additional time and inconvenience to add to the trip. When Metro opened to Vienna, it made a huge difference. But that's all.

I'll give you an example. I commute from Arlington to Sterling (about 25 miles one-way, using the same routes you will use). I've tried leaving at different times to see how it affects my commute. Generally speaking:

If I leave at 7 AM, I'll get to Sterling between 8:15 and 8:30.
If I leave at 8 AM, I'll get to Sterling between 9:00 and 9:15.
If I leave at 9 AM, I'll get to Sterling between 9:35 and 9:45.
If I leave at 9:30 AM, I'll get to Sterling around 10:30.

Generally speaking, you have to pinpoint your morning commute if you're making this drive, and I find it most advantageous to be passing through 66 in Arlington County after 9 AM, but getting to the Dulles Toll Road spur no later than 9:30. Why? Because between 9:30 and 10:00 AM every day, they shut a lane down on the westbound Dulles Toll Road spur, and the traffic jam shifts there from 66. So your window of opportunity to avoid most traffic is to enter VA a little after 9 AM and be at the Toll Road/Access Road split no later than 9:40.

Now keep in mind this doesn't take into account the traffic just getting out of DC, and it is not foolproof - you can hit bumper-to-bumper outbound 66 traffic at any time.

In short, you're looking at probably at at least an hour and 15 minutes in the morning. The afternoon, again depends on when you leave. If you leave before 3:30 to head back in, you're good. If not, might as well wait until after 6 to leave Reston.

Hope this helps!
