...can someone tell me why I care about the firing of their president? It's been in the paper day after day now and, on the news, there was quite a detailed segment about it. I'm sure I should care but I'm having a hard time.

Because people get interested in petty politics, back-room deals, and secret meetings - especially when it concerns institutions or people of prestige. The fact that it's got the faculty and campus in an uproar, combined with a bunch of business-minded types conducting a future case study in how NOT to do leadership transitions, just adds to it.

Yeah, I get why they care down in Charlottsville, just not quite sure it warrants the amount of publicity it has been getting here.

The only articles I've read about it were in Slate and NY Times. (But then, I don't read the Post on weekdays, so maybe they covered it too.) I think it's newsy because it's in our state and because the firing of a popular president of a large state university for no apparent reason is intriguing to many. I'm assuming it would get just as much attention in VA if it were Tech or JMU, etc.

There are a lot of UVA parents and graduates in the area, I guess, so some natural interest there? I'm not either one of those, however, so I haven't followed the story at all and don't know anything about it. But I'm starting to feel like I better go dig all those back papers out of the recycling bin and find out what's been going on...
If you read the Slate article I linked above and skip to the end, you'll see the presumptive reason for her firing seems to be she was more into strategic planning than "strategic dynamism." Which means basically nothing, far as I can tell. These management-theory types seem to need others to regurgitate their favorite buzzwords back to them, or they get nervous.
An institution partially funded by our tax dollars is holding secret meetings, dismissing the president without an official vote, and mishandling the fallout from their hamhanded actions. That's newsworthy in my opinion. Add that this debacle has occurred at one of the most prestigious public universities in the country that's in our own backyard and I think the coverage is justified. Lord knows i'd rather read about this than the Sandusky trial.
