The gate just gave out, completely flat on the ground. May have to replace the whole side. Any reasonably-priced companies you can recommend? (Not that I even know what "reasonably-priced" means for fences.)

I'd recommend Expert Fence. They did a good job on mine and had reasonable prices.

Over at checkbook.org, 65% of 251 customers who rated Carter Fence gave them a Superior for overall performance. That's about average for a fence company in the area. Compare to 86% Superior for Expert Fence out of an even 200 and 86% as well for Accokeek Fence out of 254.

Another +1 for Carter Fence, out of all the companies that have been to our house to perform work/jobs they were the best to deal with and the outcome was better than we expected (custom work).

Agree with Carter. We used them two years ago. We also watch for lumber shrinkage and it has been non-existent.

Then you don't have actual wood. Wood naturally seeks moisture-content equilibrium with its environment, absorbing and releasing moisture to do so. This results is expansion in the first case and shrinkage in the second. With the possible exception of gates cut to excessively small tolerances, this back-and-forth simply shouldn't matter in a wood fence.

Like hell I don't have actual wood. You should have seen the splinters of it when a tree fell on a section last year....

OK, Snicks--just to show you I'm not a meany:

Fence Company?

ISO Fencing Company in Arlington

Suggestion on good fencing company

Fencing reccomendations?

Fencing Companies in NoVa

Experinces with fencing companies

In your defense: C-D should get rid of the search button at the top (which searches ALL forums in the U.S.) and leave just the one a bit lower and to the right ("Search This Forum"), which searches just the NoVA forum. I get the feeling a lot of people try the former and are frustrated to see threads from 3,000 miles away come up in their search.
