Venture,
May I suggest a new radio, and try tuning to a station (RNR??) not in Annapolis. Other stations across the dial had rather good coverage w/some info for both the WV panhandle & NoVa.
To be sure, details about specific roads/streets was tough to find since (and this may come as a surprise to you) there were 70+ MPH winds about... but of course, that means that all should've been fine ~ 1/2 hour later...

Kudos to Dominion, Verizon, and all other utility companies & their employees for their hard work in near 100 degree temps!

PS - for those w/phone issues - it's not greener on the other side. Most traditional "phone" lines across this area are above ground. Guess what - they're in worse shape than below ground fiber optics...(one of my business partners in McLean will be w/o home phone until Tues)

Seriously considering returning to copper for phone.
Another "benefit" of government de-regulation?

Not sure why you think that. You place all your eggs into on basket and its going to happen.

The "4 state area" reference is very common on Hagerstown/Chambersburg/Martinsburg/Winchester radio and TV stations. It would not generally be applied to any part of VA east of Leesburg, so Fairfax County is not part of the "4 state area".

OP was referring to WRNR-AM in Martinsburg, WV not WRNR-FM in Annapolis.

Verizon has a limited calling plan, no long distance, with caller ID for about ~$25 per month. You may be able to get something even cheaper. Each month we consider switching to a bundle with Comcast to save a little $, but there are so many Comcast outages (had another this weekend, of course--fortunately we escaped the power outage). And when an event like this weekend's occurs, I am always glad to have it.

Re: OP's point, I realize that it was a rapidly moving storm, but I was amazed that there was so little warning through the outlets that are usually sounding the alarm for hours before far less severe weather--and the email alerts from the counties didn't come until the storm was already on us. I really don't get it.

Not sure where you are but Doug Hill on WTOP first mentioned the word "derecho" around 3:30 pm on Friday. He also mentioned that it might be a very ugly evening.

Capital Weather Gang said "derecho" at 6:45.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were posted as early as 10:00 pm.

Starting around 9:00 pm, reports were coming in from Parkersburg that it was getting -slammed-. I was moving supplies into the basement by 9:00 and securing all the outside toys soon thereafter.

Oh, thank goodness. However, I may now start referring to Loudoun and Western PWC by that moniker.

PWC would be too far south, but western Loudoun would qualify.
