I am looking to open a second account with a credit union in the area. Which of these three credit unions would you suggest that I take more of a look at? I am eligible to join the three of them. Thanks.

Vantria Federal Credit Union
Fairfax County Federal Credit Union
Apple Federal Credit Union

I do business with Vantria and Apple with no problems.

I've heard enough unfavorable stories about Fairfax County FCU that I leave that one alone.

We've been using Apple FCU for a few years and haven't seen anything we dislike sufficiently enough to notice and discuss.

But, then again, we used Chevy Chase Bank for decades and didn't see anything we disliked sufficiently enough to notice and discuss other than their rising fee structure which finally drove us away.

I'm curious for those saying NEGATIVE things about the various financial entities what really was negative about them and if it was actually in their experience (rather than anecdotal). I personally have experience with a very small handful of banking/credit entities over, like, 50 years of using them - am I unusual in NOT hopping around?

Apple seems to have many more branches in the area than the other two. Additionally, Apple members can make free use of the ATMs at all of the 7-11s in the area.

The 7-11 deal is not at all exclusive to Apple. If your CU is a part of the CO-OP network, there are no fees at nearly 30,000 ATM's in 7-11's, Wawa's, and other convenience store type places all over the country. Area FCU's that are CO-OP members include Apple, Fairfax County, Navy, Northwest, Congressional, Northrop-Grumman, Lafayette, Western, USPS, and probably some that I missed.

You may want to check out Pentagon Federal. Anyone can now join by paying a $15 fee. I have my auto loan, mortgage, and a Visa card with them...they have excellent programs and rates.

Since when have they been open to everyone?

As long as I can remember. You just have to donate money to an organization:

$20 to National Military Family Assoc
or
$15 to Voices for America's Troops

Go here https://netmember3.penfed.org/NetMem...igibility.aspx and select None.

Yeah, it's sort of like the 501(c)(4) loophole in Citizens United. Not just anybody can join a credit union, no sirree! But anybody who makes a trivial payment to a particular 501(c)(3) can.

There is also State Department Federal Credit Union and Congressional Federal Credit Union... both open to all as well via organizations.

With the Co-Op network and most banks doing online deposits these days... the need for a local branch is becoming less and less needed.
