Default Marylanders moving to Virginia in Droves

Is this a good thing? Marylanders move in droves to Virginia - Washington Times

I understand wanting to escape Maryland with their high taxes, public schools going down hill, and more services to attract more illegals, but is this a good thing for Virginia?

LOL. I like Maryland and since I work there most of the time, it doesn't seem like this story is entirely true. My understanding is that the taxes have always been high which was why co-workers recommended that we lived closer to my husband's work. I do think that there are more crazy drivers in Maryland for some reason...wouldn't imagine the driving test is any different but I am so happy when I work from home!

If this is entirely true, I don't see why it would be bad for us. The more the merrier.

Very misleading data in this article.

The article correctly states that a little under 40,000 (actual number is 39,353) tax filers moved from MD to VA from 2007-2010. What the article fails to mention, however, is that 33,259 tax filers moved from VA to MD. (Source: http://interactive.taxfoundation.org/migration/)

I don't think it's a good thing or a bad thing. Anytime the border of two states is in a large metro area, there is going to be a lot of migration between those states.

You have to take the source with a grain of salt. The Washington Times tends to skew its reporting against lefty-blue MD in favor of red-meat VA. Furthermore the WT's source is Change Maryland, a "nonpartisan group advocating for less state spending and lower taxes". In other words, a partisan group with an agenda.

I'm sure if the article were true, the exodus from MD would move to the People's Republic of Arlington.

I don't hardly pay any attention to what the Times prints. Every article I've ever read from them has been politically skewed.

Anyway, I left Maryland for Virginia. I did it for "crime" reasons. I didn't realize the bonus I would get in my paycheck. Sweet.

I moved from Maryland to Virginia for commute reasons - commuting from Bowie to Herndon gets old fast. In addition, I was in the process of transitioning from full-time-regular employee to full-time-contract employee and the companies in my (software development) field were simply out "here" rather than out "there" (would have had to move to, say, Rockville/Gaithersburg to enjoy the same opportunities). Since was already working in Herndon the area to move to was a no-brainer.

I do notice so much more Maryland license plates out there and I'm like what the hell? It's bad enough they mess up their own freeways they have to come here and mess up our freeways too??

I'm one of those Marylanders that moved to VA - although I did it mainly due to my friends being over on this side of the river and to be closer to work than for anything else. It's also for that reason that you have to take this article with a grain of salt -we're centered in a metropolitan area that is made up of two states and an independent city within a very small geographic footprint. I wouldn't be drawing huge conclusions just yet when moving to another city or state around here can mean a 10 minute drive.

Eh I'm sure they would say the same about all the virginia plates coming to Bethesda Naval, Rockville, Bethesda, and other parts of Moco which are prospering from corporate and government jobs.

This is clearly a case of the Washington times trying to pretend that tax policies have failed maryland somehow. The fact is, a lot of marylanders love maryland and would never come to this state because of some of our backwards social issues. Beyond the net 7000 people that exchanged borders, I wonder if the study also viewed how many new residents moved to MoCo over that same period. I can assure you it far outpaced the 7000 they lost to Virginia. MoCo is still one of the top counties in the country to live in for job stability, affluence, schools. It just happens that Loudoun/Fairfax/Arlington is better in our opinions
