I live in Stenwood boundries but have a child who isn't school aged yet, so I can't provide much detailed info. But I can tell you all the feedback I've heard from neighbors about the school has been good.

Here's the school profile on the FCPS web site:

FCPS - School Profiles - Stenwood ES

All I can tell you is that the people we've known who sent their kids there were happy (no complaints to speak of); it gets an "8" on Great Schools; it's a split feeder to Thoreau and Kilmer MS; and everyone who attends Stenwood is zoned for Marshall HS, regardless of whether they attend Thoreau (which sends most of its students to Madison) or Kilmer (which sends most of its students to Marshall).

I know I weighed in on the other thread, but I'll add more about what I know about Stenwood, although it's nominal. I think it is a solid school. I cannot imagine anyone saying they wouldn't want to send their kid there, unless they were an extreme school snob only looking for the best schools.

Two big neighborhoods that feed into that school are Dunn Loring Woods and Stonewall Manor. They are both very family-friendly neighborhoods with split levels, colonials, and bi-levels from the 60's and 70's. I would call it a middle-middle to upper-middle class neighborhood. There are no fancy houses, but due to the high cost of living here, fancy houses in good neighborhoods come at a high premium. There is a swim club in Dunn Loring (Dunn Loring Woods) that is very popular with the neighborhood families and has the usual swim team. I have friends who go there and love it. It seems like a very friendly place to live.

As for the school, I believe it to be populated by "regular" middle to upper middle class families with probably some lower-income mixed in. I have friends who go to Stenwood and are very pleased. I also had friends in the past who went there and liked it. It seems like a down-to-earth kids type of school - not one with a snobby vibe. There seems to be lots of extracurriculars and family involvement.

My friend worked there for a year and LOVED it! I don't know anything specific about teachers there. I do believe the building itself had some type of renovation a year or two ago.

As for negatives, my only one I could come up with is that the area around Gallows road is seeing a lot of construction these days, so it may be a pain sometimes to visit the school.

I see now that you are coming from Long Island. What part?

DLW and SM are the two neighborhoods zoned for Stenwood that also are zoned for Thoreau MS. The rest of the Stenwood district assigned to Kilmer MS is more diverse - it includes townhouses off of Gallows Road and near the Dunn Loring Metro, as well as some newer, more expensive SFH in Dunn Loring (off Sandburg Street) and also closer to Tysons.

FWIW, I think the bulk of the construction off Gallows is a bit closer south towards Lee Highway (i.e., the "Mosaic District" project), so that if you actually lived in the Stenwood district you'd be able to avoid most of it.

Hi,
We are coming from Rockville Centre, Long Island. Hoping to find a home to rent and move soon as my husbands new job starts in August and I want to meet him there before school starts.
