Default For the people living with a roommate -Arlington area

How long did it take you to find a roommate?

Because the rents here are so astronomical I wouldn't mind living with a roommate or even 2 roommates. I was thinking of just renting out a 3 BR place somewhere in Arlington/Falls Church even DC and posting an ad on craigslist. I'm thinking that I could cover the rent for the first month or two but not long term.

What is the level of risk here? One the one hand, if I get a place I now have this place eating up all of my money and there's no guarantee that the person/people I'm going to live with will be reliable or that I'm going to get along with them. On the other hand, this is the cheapest way to live in a good area.

I found a roommate within a week or so when I was looking. It helped that I was willing to live anywhere in Arlington with metro access, not just Ballston or Clarendon (I ended up in Crystal City). This was a few years ago, but I just responded to a half dozen craigslist postings, made sure my evenings were clear so I could go see the places ASAP, and put on my best interview personality.

I found my roommate within a week of looking and one in-home visit. I've gotten along with him thus far but walked right into an ugly break-up with his live-in girlfriend. Beside that we've gotten along. If you are renting someone along the orange line you will have no trouble finding roommates quickly. Most places I looked at on my Sat visit here were gone by the end of the weekend.

In north Arlington, not far from metro, you'll find someone quickly and if there's parking, even faster than that...From my own roommate search, I found that a lot of ppl who work in Tyson's like to live near the orange line even though they drive to work. We just found a new roommate for the group house I live in along the Orange line in N Arlington. I'd say we got a little over 30 emails over the course of a week after posting our ad on Craigslist and of those, we chose 8 to interview. One of those ended up being our new roommate. The whole process took less than 3 weeks.

Is it because she makes sure there is always toilet paper?

lol, she's clean and she cooks. you never have to worry about someone not paying their rent or utilities. more privacy and you can walk around the house naked if you want

Near the Metro, I found the cost to room-share *too* expensive. My take was sometimes the "third roommate" tend to take on a larger share of the rent. Renting a freaking sun-room (not a real bedroom) for 1,000 without utilities is a joke. Take a look at group house: rents tend to be cheaper and when parking is available it tends to be free. Rosslyn is typically spoken about the least but I think the location is great. There is access to the Orange/Blue lines, several bus lines and you can walk to Georgetown/Foggy Bottom.
