Thanks for the info. Our kids are 4 and 2. They like to do the basic little kiddie stuff, then husband and I take turns on roller coasters while the kids nap. So is SF just smaller than KD in terms of rides?

At ages 2 and 4 you might try Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster PA. It's listed as one of the Top 5 Best Kid’s Park in the World by Amusement Today magazine (at least according to the DW website). My daughter LOVED it when she was little. It's an amusement park/theme park especially for very young children. There are no roller coasters though (But Hershey Park, in the same area, has them).

SF has the Looney Toons area and Whistlestop Park. The Whistlestop Park is not bad, but not shaded at all. KD has a more shaded kids' area. Compare the kids' rides on the two websites.

Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens are better for young kids in terms of entertainment and rides. My young cousins had a blast at Busch Gardens last year. As a kid, my favorite park was Busch Gardens. I personally don't think any Six Flags is worth it unless it is the only option.

Maybe check out the Montgomery County Fair, while it's still up?

Each park definitely attracts a different crowd and offers different experiences. I only bothered with Six Flags because they offered $20 tickets through my work one year. If I had to pay full price, I'd rather just wake up really early and make the drive to Williamsburg.
The wife and I are going to Disney next month. We're banking on spending about $500 or $600 for our tickets just for Disney, plus a couple hundred for Universal.

KD and Busch are much better for local parks, haven't been to Hershey yet. Mind you, the last time I was at SF was probably 10 years ago, and it certainly didn't impress me then. They've added one decent ride since then, if I remember right. Theres almost zero shade in the park and no ambiance whatsoever. Both KD and Busch at least have plenty of character, with Busch being better. That said, the wife and I have had season passes for BG for probably the last 5 or 6 years, we go down a few weekends a year.

A bit of Trivia as a southerner:

Can you name the 6 Flags of Six Flags ?

Keep in mind it started in TX.

Thanks for the info. We held off on going, may try a PA park on a long weekend. Think they're too young to really enjoy SF.

Good call. I was in Disneyland on Friday, and oh my gosh, the number of small children who were having melt downs all afternoon was sad. It's such a long day for little guys.

I would second the suggestion of Hershey Park, but that's probably because I am partial to Chocolate World. Everything there is clean and family-friendly, and it's an easy drive.

Another place in Pennsylvania, though further, is Seseme Place, Sesame Place: Family Theme Park in Pennsylvania, if they are gung ho Seseme Street nuts. No idea what it looks like today, twenty years ago my boys liked it but at that time it wasn't very big, plus the current ticket price looks high (or I just haven't been to a theme park recent enough to realize how expensive they are now).
