Go ahead and call them. One year this bill arrived late for us, so we paid it late--and got hit with a fairly big fine. Now we make sure we pay it on time.

$812 for 2012 Nissan Quest Minivan and $224 for 2005 Honda CR-V. Fairfax County. We paid over 1k and we certainly do not have sexy cars.

Info from Fairfax County's web site:

Motor Vehicles

A vehicle is subject to tax if it is normally garaged or parked in the County, even if registered in another state. Tax on motor vehicles is prorated for the portion of the year it is located in the County unless the vehicle is moved to a non-prorating Virginia locality.

The current tax rate for personal property in Fairfax County is $4.57 for each $100 of assessed value.
Anyone know how this applies to military? Husband is NC resident, military, car is NC registered, but parked here. My name is not on it. This line would make it seem like he is needing to pay here as well?

All I know is we can't get relief on my car, even jointly owned, because I am a VA resident. (My car is registered here and we pay all the VA taxes on it). We are FFX County/unincorp Alex.

here is straight from the Arlington County werbsite:

Why have personal property taxes changed?
A. The state never fulfilled its promise to eliminate the personal property tax. State funding is now capped.
The Virginia General Assembly changed the way the personal property tax subsidy is distributed. Starting with tax year 2006, each jurisdiction in Virginia receives a fixed amount for personal property tax relief, regardless of the number or value of the cars registered in that jurisdiction.
It is up to each jurisdiction to decide how to distribute its portion of the tax relief to eligible vehicles. State relief is still only applied to the first $20,000 in annual assessed value.
Arlington’s fixed share of the tax relief money each year is approximately $31.3 million. This represents 3.29% of the total statewide tax relief.
With the adoption of the FY 2007 budget in April 2006, Arlington changed its personal property tax rate from $4.40 per $100 of assessed value to $5.00 per $100 of assessed value – the first rate increase in more than 20 years. The action was taken after a public hearing.
The effective tax rate is still lower than that of neighboring jurisdictions such as Falls Church, Fairfax and Alexandria. The increased revenues will be used to support competitive public safety pay and real estate tax relief.

Do I understand this correctly?

--Localities (in this case Arlington) set their own personal property tax rate which they charge taxpayers
--they blame the state for not reimbursing them 100% of the rate they set
--What reimbursement they do get comes from the same taxpayers in any case
--Localities then use part of the money from the same taxpayers to lower property tax rates (for the same taxpayers)

Is it just me or is this a lot like a shell game or three card monte? There has to be administrative costs for every one of these shuffles of the same money.

I got my bill yesterday. They way undervalued my brand new car. It should be about $21K and it was valued at $13K. I guess I won't say anything.

You're probably right - but they create the perception in the public mind that we're getting a "relief", even though the total net cost to administer all these various taxes is probably higher as a result.

Ugh. $370 for a new Prius.

That's the final kick in the pants with my car saga. It wasn't my choice to change vehicles; the criminal who injured me and totaled my old car made that choice for me. I merely wanted to replace with the same vehicle since it saved my life. Ugh.
