Hi - Are there any waterfalls within couple hours drive from Northern Virginia (Herndon)? Just wanted to go somewhere this weekedn and we covered all the beaches so it would be nice to see a waterfall for a change.

Interesting question! The one waterfall that came to my mind right away is in Great Falls :-) park either on VA or MD side. I have not been to others in VA, but check these links from google -

Shenandoah National Park has about a dozen waterfalls that are off hiking trails from Skyline Drive. They sell a $2 book that shows how to get to them all. The better ones are located in the center of the park near Skyland Ranch and Big Meadow.

Great Falls on the Potomac is definitely the closest major one, I second that idea. Being right on the fall line here in Fairfax they are all around. Shenandoah N.P. also has some as mentioned. Once you get deep into the mountains in WV and PA there are some nice ones all over too.

Interesting. I have been to Great Falls so many times but have never seen the falls. Thank you for the info.

Great Falls in the winter can be quite spectacular too, especially after a snow melt. I know this isn't Northern Virginia, but the cascades down near VaTech are amazing too (part of the new river falls area). Go Hokies!

Piney Run Falls in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (Virginia side) is easy to access and a treat.
