Yeah, I know - the prices here stink. It is what it is. But the job market is good, which is why you're here, right? We came very close to leaving town for a cheaper area, but my husband just couldn't find what he wanted there, so here we stay.

There aren't a lot of other areas I would want to live in, to be honest. We take it for granted, but other than cost of living and traffic, the DC area is a great place to live for so many reasons.
Seems that a lot of folks around these parts have some sort of connection to Huntsville. Either they have lived there; know someone that lives/use to live there; lived close to Huntville, etc...

I agree with you...the DC area is pretty rad! We had really good jobs in Huntsville but that was about it! Very boring, too small---I mean, you could never go anywhere without bumping into a ton of co-workers or something. That was a drag. Here...we actually have to put some thought into what we want to do with our leisure becuase there is SO much to choose from!

Since you are new to the area and not yet parents and want to be forward thinking in your purchase, I think you need to do some homework on private school tuition here and the cost of daycare. Infant care in this area starts at $300/wk. Private schools will vary, but anything I ever researched (besides Catholic school) was 15k +.

No kids and a TH for $550K convenient to the Pentagon? Old Town Alexandria, no question. Don't waste your time on anywhere else.

You missed the part about wanting a house to stay in long term and raise the soon-to-be-desired children in. Old Town is fantastic for the DINKs of the area, but she's not going to find 2500 sf, good schools, HOAs with pools and gyms, for under $550k.

Meh, kids and lots of square footage are overrated.

Yeah, daycare costs are ridonk around here. I talk to my ILs in TX and what I pay for 2 days of daycare is what they pay for a whole week for my niece and nephew. And my kid wasn't even in the most expensive place in town. I have no idea how people pay for 2 kids in daycare, plus a mortgage/rent, plus do any saving.

I have a friend who actually flew her mother in every Sunday night and back home every Friday night, because it was that much cheaper than day care.
