Hello everyone!

I'm new to the site, I'm form Northern Jersey and have been down here since February. I work at the Pentagon but I live in Centreville right next to I-66. I have to be at work by 6:30 am Mon-Fri. My employer reimburses up to $145 for either parking or metro/bus/rail etc. I've looked into slugging and the metro as well as buses but I can't seem to justify or clarify for myself what would be the most efficient or cheapest. I'm looking for advice like, where is there free parking for metro, if there is slugging in Centreville, how reliable is it, is slugging reliable period, if I slug into work but need to get home, what train/bus or both do I need. I tried mapping this all out myself but I just got frustrated and stopped. Or, the second option would to be, commute, 40 minutes into work, pay 130 for parking, get it reimbursed but then I end up filling up four times a month. Roughly 65 dollars. Ugh, anyways, any info or advice would be so appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Even if you found a way to take the trains, it would cost well over $145/month (figuring $5 each way during rush hour = $10/day * 22 work days = $220 + whatever parking cost). It wouldn't save you any time if your current commute is 40 minutes, as the train alone from Vienna to the Pentagon is around 35 minutes (plus then you have to get from your house to Vienna, park, and catch the train).

Slug lines don't appear to exist in Centreville: Map of Slugging Sites in Washington DC

Seeing as you have to be in so early (and therefore should miss the worst of the traffic), I'd just keep driving. To me, a total of $65/month for all commute costs is a pretty good deal.

That's what I figured. I just wanted to see if I wasn't overlooking anything. Thanks for your input

Try looking for a carpool -- or even offering to start one!

Slugging is the best idea ever!

1- saves tax costs on mass transit
2- get to experience a wide variety of cars (as slugger)
3- get to meet lots of new people (as sluggee)

Take it from someone who's added 318 cars to their list of cars ridden in since August 31, 2011... slugging is awesome.

Is your agency seriously making you start work at 6:30? (Please tell me that's not the case, and that it's just your preference.)

You might try one of the various commuter buses: Commuter Buses

Slugging is great but not sure how organized it is from Centreville.
