Seriously considering a move to the DC area. Sort of. ie I would work in DC area but not being able to afford a house, would likely look way out from DC. Open to general thoughts on best places to look. No kids so don't care about schools, or convenience to shopping/etc. I don't need a massive lot, but I will not buy a place w/one of these postage-stamp yards either....I want some elbow room. No precise lot size in mind as it can vary pending how it's all laid out. eg a friend of mine has a place where the lot isn't very big at all, but it backs up to a wooded ravine kind of thing, so nobody is very close.

Housing I would probably need to look under $300K, roughly. Flexible on house style, age etc but area would need to be "nice" ie not w/people who blast their alleged music everywhere or don't take care of their places, etc. A respectable neighborhood, for lack of a better way to put it (yeah I know that's somewhat vague and subjective...).

What do ya got? Any possible areas like this, or am I dreaming? Due south seems too built up already from what I gather and obviously north is. Far west is one area I've heard of, and I hear there are various public transportations that stop near park n rides etc that aren't bad. Hoping to live an hour or less away but realize given it's DC, may need to stretch that - 90 mins is probably my max.

PG County is close to DC for a house in that range. 300K will buy you a large townhome in Chantilly.

Thx but no townhouses. House houses. ie "single family homes" Note the sizable yard/elbow room requirement.....appreciate the reply though

In Fredericksburg you can get a house with a backyard for under 300K. Commuter train into DC > 80 Mins.

You can get a nice house out near Haymarket for that.

ugh sorry should have added no trains, been there/done that, hate em, but thx. Surprising though, I always heard Fredericksburg was expensive-?

Haymarket, really? I would've thought I'd have to go farther out....

Depends how big and new a house you need. If you don't require a 2000's McMansion there are plenty of older smaller homes out there in that price range.

What about farther west? Seems to sort of trail off quickly until you get to Front Royal.

If you want to work in DC and not commute more than 90 minutes, then you can't live further west than Manassas. Traffic is horrendous in this area.

are you saying you plan to drive into the city? Because I think people were thinking about VRE train or metro access. It's a shame to cut out that option, to be honest.

Don't rule out MD - a friend of mine lives in Cheverly and loves it.
