Son passed his driver's test in August and we are still waiting for the notification to get his permanent license -- does anyone know how long this should take? I know we have to go to the Courthouse for it but haven't received anything in the mail yet. Was wondering if I should be calling DMV about this yet?

Sorry, don't really know the process, but why would you have to go to the Courthouse? Why isn't everything handled at the DMV?

It is Virginia law that the permanent licenses of those under age 18 be presented by a juvenile court judge. The ceremony includes a stern lecture by the judge about safe driving.

They have been doing this forever...I remember my ceremony in 1967. It was held in the auditorium of the almost new Marshall High School. There were hundreds of kids there and it took FOREVER....LOL.

I can't remember how long it took but it seemed like for my son it took longer than for my daughter. It was probably about 2 months before he went. I think it is a long enough time that you should give someone a call.

Ahhh. I remember the "driving is a privilege" lecture from the judge.

Unfortunately, I had the misfortune to see my judge again...in his courtroom. Just couldn't keep my foot out of it!

One more example of how VA imposes the power of the state where personal and parental responsibility should suffice. For supposedly being so conservative this really is a nanny state. I'm sure you'll find youth accident rates here are no lower than in states where they just hand the license to the parent and child at the DMV. I doubt insurance companies are giving the kids here lower rates because of our judges' exhortations.

Wow, I had no idea it was like that. Totally kills the joy of the day you pass the test, knowing you'll have to sit around and wait up to 6 months to get your "talkin' to" before you can drive. I remember in Maryland, you went back inside the MVA, they took your picture, and you walked out with your license.
