Considering the size and length of this storm, 28,000 doesn't seem too bad. I know it's still early though..

Lots (what a specific number, I know) out @ Arlington near 66 headed W to the Beltway, w/ a fair number of darkened areas thru Fairfax about 45 min ago.
FWIW, if you own a large/serious 4WD (NOT an "all wheel drive") vehicle & can handle bad weather, a number of medical offices/clinics/services need transportation.

I hadn't heard that they were asking for help transporting medical personnel.

My nerves are calm and cool as a cucumber. And I am not "read[ing] insults where none were intended."

Referring to first responders, doctors and nurses who voluntarily showed up for work this morning off-shift with the following remark IS an insult:

If a tree crashed on his house and he or his family were injured, I bet he's the type of a person to complain that EMTs didn't arrive quickly enough or that the doc and nurse at ER didn't attend to him fast enough.

Surely then he would NOT be saying that they should have stayed home until the storm passed over.

Contrary to what he wrote, these folks didn't come in this morning because their employers were greedy or because they were too evolutionarily dumb (talk about amoral cynicism...). They did so because they were selfless and dedicated to helping others even at personal risk.

Lost power a little after 5:30 pm (heard the transformer explosion a block away) and power restored by 6:45 pm. Not too bad for Dominion!

What causes those? That happened about a month ago here during a run of the mill rain storm but, knock on wood, hasn't today.

These can be caused a myriad of things, but in this case, I think it was a surge (caused by a broken circuit) that blew out the transformer.

I am admittedly not a fan of Dominion, but they are far superior to PEPCO.

One blew up in front of me right after Isabel. Sparks flew and reminded me of the lightning activation scene in the original Frankenstein.

I'm out in the Greenbriar area, by Fair Lakes, and we had the power go off briefly around 8:00, then again 8:30 and 9:00, about every half hour. I still expect it to be off for good one of these times. A lot of wind and rain out there, or so it sounds. Just said 91,000 Dominion people out on the news.
