I'm moving from Phoenix to the DC area to be near my daughter and family who live in DC, in Glover Park (for reference: north of Georgetown, east of Palisades, 1 mile south of the National Cathedral). Would very much want to be within 10 miles of them. Would live in Glover Park if I could afford it

Stats: active, 65 year old widow, retired RN.

Love: outdoors, yoga, hiking (well, here in AZ anyway), reading (close to a library is a plus)

Looking for:
townhome
500K to 600K, can go a little higher if necessary
conveniently located to shops, community center, library
walkability a big plus
sense of community is important

I welcome any suggestions. I see that there a lot of townhomes south of McLean around Kirby Road. Any comments on those?

I know the area generally... used to live in Frederick MD many years ago, and my daughter went to UVA... but don't really know of any specific communities.

Any benefits to VA versus MD?

Without schools or a commute to worry about, you're a free agent! Maybe that's why you haven't gotten any responses yet - DC is your oyster, and you can live anywhere.

Here's one idea for you: Potomac Yard | Alexandria VA New Homes | Pulte Homes

Sigh... thanks for your reply, doppelganger. Was hoping for some personal knowledge/recommendation of various close in townhome communities that are livable and "affordable" - whatever that might mean in nova. Yes, I can find a dozen THs on the websites, but nothing there tells me how that looks in context of the life of that community. So... hopefully looking for comments that encompass more than just what I can see on the realtor websites.

azdi, Fairlington might work for you. It meets a lot of your requirements, though it is not on a metro line and would be a 20+ minute drive to Glover Park.

Del Ray might fit the bill for you. Walkability can be a challenge in Nova. Neighborhoods built in tne 1950s or earlier tend to be better in that department, but they are few and far between in Nova. The other option is very recent development in Alexandria and Arlington. The downside is these may not have an established sense of community yet.

As for the benefits of VA...i think we may have a lower tax burden than Maryland, we have no speed cameras, and if you like to pack heat, this is the state for you! Access to Glover Park is probably easier from Maryland...there are just more ways to get there.

I'd post at DC Urban Mom. I think you will get more insight. Post under the Real Estate and Home Improvement thread.
