My sweet husband had to drive into D.C. last night at 12:30 to pick me up from Union Station (because Amtrak sucks).

He normally stays off the toll road, but he was following the navigation system, got on at Reston Parkway. He pulled up to the full service booth, stopped, and waited. He didn't go to the exact change booth because he didn't have exact change. Once he realized no one was at the booth and someone pulled up behind him, he drove through. He said there was no one to take his money and the light was green. We don't have EZpass yet, either.

At the next toll, it was manned, he paid that toll and the toll-taker told him to call the service number. He called and was not able to get a human being.

I assume he's going to get a ticket, but my question is, how much? Just the price of the toll? Or that plus "processing fees"? Did they take a picture of his plate? Any advice?

I'm not that familiar with the road, but I am guessing if the light was green that it was ok to go. Maybe they weren't charging a toll at that time of night?

Don't wait for the mail. Just keep trying to call. You can pay the toll over the phone and won't get fined. We did that a fews months ago. Call Monday.

If you call the service #, your CC will get charged the amount of the toll. I had that happen a few years ago, my Amex got charged $0.75. If you don't call there is a chance you'll get an extra $10 surcharge on the toll.

Using a navigation system also (in Florida) I ended up in some EZ Pass lanes. I was in a rental and had no EZ Pass and could not get out of them. I had to drive through them. A few months later I got a $25 fine along with have to pay the $1.00 toll.

Me too. it may mean that there will be no fine. When they call they will be able to check if their car plates were photographed and logged or not. Maybe they weren't and won't need to pay anything.

This happened to me one time on the toll road getting on headed East from 28. I got in the EZ pass only and realized too late. The barrier was down but then somebody pulled up behind me and blared their horn and the light went green and the barrier went back up.
I suspect that the person behind me got close enough for his ezpass to trip the toll gate and as such he essentially paid my toll for me.
I never received a ticket or fine for the incident.
