i'm considering a career move which would drag me from my metrobus and metrorail 25 minute commute from arlington off 395 to downtown for a reverse commute to sterling off rte 7.

any ideas on public transportation out there? is the drive a must? should i be considering any particular work timeframes (8-4, 9-5?)

i did a wikimap serach, and to be honest it doesnt even look like they know how to build sidewalks out there so i'm wondering how people get to work from any of the bus stops?

There is some public transportation but primarily in the form of commuter buses taking people into town, or metro at East Falls Church.

My suggestion if you were seriously considering a job in Sterling is to factor in relocation. From that part of Alexandria you would be looking at a commute of well over an hour and at least 30 miles. If you own or rent you could get more for your money in the western fairfax, eastern loudoun area and if you haven't spent much time there you might be surprised - it is a pretty vibrant, active area for all ages.

I'd agree. It would be a trek. Unless you've got real roots along 395, I'd consider making the move if you want to take the job...

We have a lot of sidewalks in Sterling! We even have indoor plumbing . There are plenty of activities for all ages and I think you'll find that rent expense is less than Arlington or Alexandria.
