Let's return to the original topic. Commendations for law enforcement are duly noted.

So i am considering moving out of MD (as im sure lots of people would if they could). I have been to Virginia many times and am always excited and facinated by the state and all you can do there. I have heard but cannot verify that there is such thing as a car tax as well as a safety inspection?. would anyone be able to shed light on that? what is it? how much? is it such a crippling tax as to not consider moving? I have always lived in MD and would love to try somthing new. is there anything to be concerned about in either city? poss heavy snow in either place? have only ever been through the interstate coridors of 95 and 81 and from that i never saw anything concerning. i see gas is roughly .40 cents cheaper in VA vs MD (at least where i live) is that the case? would moving to either of these areas allow me to get a lower cost of living vs Frederick? (pretty high) i know im rambling, please any info is appreciated!
Indeed there is a car tax. And indeed there is a yearly inspection. But overall, the tax burden for folks living in Virginia is less than Maryland.

Also, the crime rate is less than Maryland. If you're a business owner, the tax burden and red-tape of regulations are also much less.

As to the two towns you are considering, indeed as other posters have stated, Winchester is much different than Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is more of a suburb of DC, and many folks do commute into DC. There are buses and the VRE. See VRE Map

Winchester, on the other hand, is much more rural. However, it isn't out of the realm for someone to drive up 81 from Winchester, and catch the MARC in Martinsburg WV. It is an approx 30 minute drive. See MARC Map.

I lived in Maryland decades ago, and have never looked back.

Good luck, and welcome should you decide to move here.

This is in reply to Tarp....Like you, I also have a home in Canada (Toronto) and I split my time 40/60% between Canada and Fredericksburg. So I am fully aware of what it is like in Canada. I can tell you that your characterization of Fredericksburg as a racist, police state is ridiculous. Unlike you, I want police to watch people who are wandering around at all hours of the night.

I am not a racist and I am not anti gay and I am not unlike any of my neighbors. I don't know where you were in Stafford Co, but I know you certainly didn't know the same people I know. I live in a racially mixed neighborhood and we ALL want safety and peace and quiet here. Please do not try to make it sound like we are backwards and biased. That is simply not true, at least where I live. Do not paint with such a broad brush.

For those interested here is a short portion of a press release regarding this shooting.

A Stafford County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a knife-wielding 17-year-old Evan F. Newsom in remote, southeastern Fauquier County at about 4:30 Friday morning.

The teenager — whose identity police released Friday night — wounded a Stafford deputy during the fight, State Police Sgt. Les Tyler said.
