As someone who moved to Gainesville 6 years ago and her husband has worked in DC, Herndon, Dulles and McLean... I don't think twice about my decision to live here in Gainesville. I'm ever thankful I don't live closer to DC because there is traffic 24/7 the closer you are to DC! Take it from me, you aren't going to want to hop on metro every day to go with your kid to DC. Live in Gainesville or the immediate area and save DC for a Saturday or Sunday visit.

If you're buying, that's a long term decision and I think you'd be well advised to try for something a little closer in than Gainesville like in Chantilly or Centreville in case of job changes. That way you're much more flexible since you're closer to the major job centers. Gainesville is not a major employment hub compared to places closer in.

These comments are very helpful. I will also add Brambleton, Chantilly, and Centreville to my list.
Husband will be starting work in January and my son and I will stay here while the house is up for sale etc. So that is the time I will go back and forth and start meeting with realtors in VA. This information will definitely give me a head start on looking.
Thanks for all of your advice.

Once he starts the new job, your husband should spend some time during his solo stay in "practice" commutes from the different communities you are considering. We did that when trying to decide between neighborhoods and it was eye-opening.

If you begin looking at homes in Fairfax, then you should check fcps.edu and research the individual schools near any houses that you are interested in. Not all Fairfax schools are equal. However, information about demographics and test scores is posted on the fcps website and there is a lot of detail there to help you make a decision.

I'd have to disagree. It'd be more like a 40 minute commute from Brambleton to Gainesville.

Just be careful about this area and do your homework on fees for the Greenway and the Toll Rd

Exactly. No chance of this commute in 20 minutes. With typical traffic (non rush hour) you're lucky if it's only 40 minutes)
