Public Transportation in Fairfax???
Hi! My company is relocating me from Miami, FL to Fairfax, VA in a few weeks. I will be working in the Dulles Airport and I will be living right behind the Fair Oaks mall area- the zipcode is 22030. Being a native Floridian, Im a little nervous about driving in the snow. Is public transportation reliable in Fairfax? What is the best way to get to Dulles from my new area? How can I find bus schedules? Is it even reccomended?
Please help!

You'll have a lot of company! One of the few downsides of having people from everywhere in the world in this town is that pretty few have any idea at all of what to do when it snows. Can lead to some pretty comical scenes at times. Then again, some years we don't get any snow at all, so maybe you'll catch a break. Otherwise, think how you might drive if you knew your brakes were out...

Well the good news is that you will be on I-95 little to none coming out of Woodbridge. However, I'm not experienced enough to comment on Route 123 which would comprise the bulk of your commute. If you were intending to use public transportation, it would probably be a time-consuming, out-of-the-way trip.

we get so little snow in this area, that on the days we do get em, you might as well take a sick day )))
seriously...they take of the roads in Fairfax pretty good, and living behind fair oaks, wont be really taking any back roads. 7100/50 to 28, they take care of those roads pretty well.

Agree with previous posters. In recent years we have not had so much snow. I miss it actually except for the driving part! Find that the only problem is getting out of the neighborhood. Once you're on a major roadway, they have cleared the snow -- salted, sanded, etc. Also keep in mind that they close the schools in a frozen moisture event.

First want to say that public transportation in Fairfax county sucks if you don't live near a metro especially when compared to areas like DC and Arlington. Car broke down and was without a car for the past two months hated taking the bus. Ironically enough I get my car up and running the weekend before the first major snow storm of my adult life. I almost took the bus this morning myself.
I'm from Georgia and I have seen snow before but never driven in it. I either had someone else drive or better yet it melted as soon as it hit pavement and only the grass got any snow cover. I learned that this has to do with the fact that it never stays below freezing long enough in GA for the pavement to be frozen. Where as here it's been so cold that it wasn't going to melt on the road particularly in quiet subdivisions. So imagine my surprise when I saw snow on the roads.
I freaked out called my stepdad who used to be a truck driver. I made it to work okay. Once out of the subdivision the roads were already clear.
Just drive slow and carefully. To all the first timers out there: Good luck and Godspeed.
