We'd like to rent a cabin for a winter vacation. As you can see from my user name, we're from Salt Lake City, so we like a little snow in the winter. We'd love to find a place that is quite snowy--not trying to ski or anything, we just want the snow to play in and a cozy cabin. How far do we need to go to find that? We have three little kids, so the closer the better. Is West Virginia reliably snowy in January? Pennsylvania? We're just kinda clueless about where to go.

Thanks!

There are some places in Pennsylvania that are reliably snowy. My husband often skis at Blue Knob and there will be snow there when there's no snow anywhere else. But that area is kind of "rustic" and there's not any really nice places to stay I don't think. You could do a search on the area and see if there's any nice cabins in that area. It's about a 3 hour drive.

Wintry vacation but close by? Hard to beat W. Virginia. Alternatively, a B&B in northern PA.

Canaan Valley area has a lot of nice cabins and there are two ski resorts there that probably have the best snow within 4-5 hours drive.

Snow on the East Coast is always a crap shoot. Last year in particular was a bust. That said, around here, West Virginia is the best and within WV, Canaan Valley is about as good as it gets without trekking off to some remote holler. Beware though. in really snowy weather you can get stuck there. If you want to go further, the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is pretty reliable (Jay Peak averages 3x as much snow as the snowiest reporting location in WV), but a long way away and remote. Some places that get lake effect snow in Western PA and Western NY also get a lot of snow.

Deep Creek Lake in MD is another place. They average 100 inches of snow there (nothing compare to little/big cottonwood canyons) a bit less than Canaan Valley (160 inches a year). Snowshoe is another place that is very like you are going find snow (180 inches a year)

It's supposed to be a brutal winter so lack of snow in January shouldn't be an issue.

My friend went camping in October in Dollysod Wilderness area (near Canaan Valley) and woke up with almost a foot of snow!
