Good afternoon!

My husband and I are thinking about buying a home in the Franklin Farm neighborhood of Herndon. I work near Metro Center and am very nervous about the commute. Does anyone have experience with the 5A express bus? I am thinking of taking it from Herndon to Rosslyn and transferring to Metro Center. It looks like the commute would take a total of an hour or so, but I don't know if this is realistic. Is there much rush hour traffic on 286N in the morning? Looks like I would have to take that to get to the park and ride lot. Also, any other commuting options that folks recommend from Herndon to downtown?

Thanks!

It took me 45 mins. to go from west end of Alex. to Metro Ctr.(and that was before they screwed up the trains) - I don't think an hour for you is at all realistic. (Plus now that the Blue line will have even less trains........j)

I do a similar commute almost every day. Never taken the 5A, but am very familiar with the 980 to West Falls Church/Orange Line route. I'm about 2 miles from the Herndon park and ride but can take back roads and avoid 286, so I can't speak on the traffic situation there. My office is a few blocks from Farragut West and door to door is usually about 1hr 15mins for me with about 20 mins of that on the bus and 20 mins on the train.

Overall it's not bad once you get used to it. The 980 runs every 5 minutes or so during rush hours and the 950 runs pretty much until Metro closes if you need to work late. The buses use the airport lane on the Toll Rd and have their own entrance from there straight into the metro station so you can avoid Tysons. 9 out of 10 days though, you won't get a seat on the train, they're mostly gone before trains get to WFC.

Once in a while I'll actually go out to the Dulles North park and ride and take the Loudoun county bus in. The commute is even longer which is the biggest reason I don't do it more, but it is a more pleasant experience otherwise (comfy seats, no transfer, and more passenger respect for each other including NO CELL PHONES).
