We're relocating from Southern Maryland to NOVA. My husband will be working right outside Crystal City Metro. We heard Burke VA would be a reasonable commute. Do you have any advice on good communities in Burke/Springfield and good schools for our soon to be Kindergartener. We also have a 3 years old who will need a Pre-K program.
Thanks for your input!

Laurette

Burke is usually a decent compromise. Some more details would be helpful. What kind of house? What is your budget? And how long a commute can you tolerate?

Can go up to 500-5550K looking for proximity to VRE and good schools. Do you have any communities in mind?
Thanks

Cherry Run, Bent Tree, Shannon Station are neighborhoods that are close to either Burke or Rolling Rd VRE.

Personally, I'd look at Cardinal Forest. Kind of woodsy vibe, in your price range, and an elementary school that parents love (West Springfield pyramid). Not as convenient to VRE as some other places though, but I'm sure other good transit options from there.

A couple additional notes about schools. In Fairfax County, elementary schools all release 2 hours early on Monday. It has been that way since forever, and is always a surprise to newcomers.

Second, you could be in four different high school pyramids in Burke. In general Fairfax County schools are universally good. People will nit pick things, but usually you can't go that wrong, even in the worst school in the county compared to schools in other places. I think most of Burke goes to Lake Braddock. Some go to Robinson. A few go to West Springfield and maybe even South County. I haven't heard too many complaints about the first two pyramids, but I have heard some complaints about a few schools in the second two pyramids.

Near Burke VRE and in your price range: Bonnie Brae neighborhood (corner of Zion and Sideburn) and nextdoor, Middleridge (off Zion). Check for "sale by owner" homes in these areas - they sometimes don't show up in MLS. Nice place for families - nearby community pools, sidewalks, a lake, walking distance to Elem school in many areas. VRE is not walking distance, but you could ride a bike there.

Burke is a good lifefstyle, you can take the VRE or drive to Crystal City. Most properties for sale are listed through a real estate broker.Welcome to NOVA!

I live in Burke Station Square, literally across the road from the Rolling Road VRE. Love the neighborhood. It's enclosed (only 1 entrance) so there is no through traffic, there's a little neighborhood park with a playground, tennis court, and basketball court, and wooded walking trails behind there with a creek (the first time I went back there I immediately wished I'd had access to that when I was 8 or 9 years old!)

Definitely homes in your price range.
