Tying all this back to the original topic, I just realized that every single Mormon family I know in this area is a "one income" family. I can't believe this did not occur to me until now.

I am friends with a Mormon couple in my neighborhood, and they both work (though they work for the same company, which helps with commuting).

Of the over three dozen LDS families that I know in this (metro DC) area, two are "one income" families and the rest are "two income" families.

Just different social circles, I'm guessing.

Notwithstanding the amount of thought put into many recent posts, the result has made the thread veer way off-topic. Returning closer to the original topic will maximize the life of this thread.

I for one am glad you started this thread because my dh has a good chance of getting a job in this area. And I've wondered if we could afford to live there with his income of $100k though we are looking to increase it to $150k, if possible. We too are a one income family (we have 4 children) and we too are LDS. We've stayed in Herndon the last two summers. He goes over there every week and we are trying to find a way of him being with us longer than just the weekend. But moving from the Dallas area to the D.C. area is kinda scary considering the extra taxes and housing expense. So to see your post made me less nervous about it.

We were looking to make the opposite move a couple years ago - NoVA to TX (Austin). We actually found that taxes came pretty close to even at about that income level. Real estate tax rates are higher in TX. Yes, real estate prices are higher and you likely won't be able to get the same size house as you have in TX. But, it really isn't as scary as you might think.

Good luck!

I wouldn't even question a family of 4 living on that income. Definitely doable.

Hi there

If your husband's job is in Herndon ...

You can fairly easily get an older house for under $400k in a lot of places in western Fairfax and central/eastern Loudoun, and a new townhouse for that price. You even have options for under $300k too.

We were looking in the $450K and below price range in the western fairfax area (Reston/Herndon/Fairfax/Chantilly) in summer 2011 - I am happy to help you with some neighborhood options. We lived in Reston for 8 years and now live just a little south in Fairfax/Chantilly area.

I'd suggest your own post looking for neighborhoods to look in.
