If one is willing to drive up to 3 hours to get it? Some type of farms around in VA or MD or WV?

If you go to craiglist in Houton for example, you have unlimited choices of puppies of all breeds, but that's not the case in DC/VA/MD.

If you are willing to consider adoption, two possibilities in NoVa are:

A Forever-Home Rescue Foundation

HART Home Page

Some puppies, some older dogs. If you are looking for a particular breed, you might mention the breed and see whether that triggers a response. Fortunately, this is not really puppy mill territory.

Many non-profit local rescue organizations show their adoptable pets on petfinder.com. You can search by (believed) breed or breed-mix and by other criteria.

I second petfinder.com. Going to some random farm you find on craigslist is risky. No need to potentially support puppy mills when there are plenty of dogs in shelters/rescues awaiting a new home.

The first website has tons of puppies. How much does it cost to adopt one?

It says there is a non-refundable $325 fee on this information sheet:

I think Petfinder is more of a clearing house for hundreds of different shelters and rescue/adoption agencies, which may have their own separate rules and fees. Hopefully AC White will correct me if I'm wrong.

Jeb77, that's right. Homeward Trails, for example, which posts on petfinder.com, charges around $125 for a cat that has already been spayed/neutered; it may be less for a puppy, but you must sign a contract that at the appropriate age, you will have the surgery done. But (on edit) when I checked a few dogs' entries, I see that HT charges between $275-350, to cover vet fees, shelter costs, etc.

we had a bad experience with one of the rescue groups already mentioned trying to adopt a puppy last year. We had gone out of our way to meet a dog at a foster family's home and then didn't get her because they had given us incorrect information on the process. It just left a bad taste in our mouths, and I'm generally an advocate for adopting strays/rescues/shelter animals.

We wound up going to a breeder and paying just a little more for a purebred puppy. This way, we had our choice from a litter and we weren't competing with other families for one dog. I think we found the breeder by going to the homepage for the breed (Labs) and then doing an area search? The family was out in front royal in the mountains.
