I have a court date tomorrow for my I-66 HOV violation. I've come to understand that "it was an accident" wont work and the judges dont have any leeway with the price of the ticket but could I ask to pay with community service instead? I'm unemployed right now and trying not to lose $125 (or is it $125+court costs).

Anyone have any experience with that? Should I just pay online? I dont have anywhere to be and unless im mistaken I'll have to pay processing costs even if I dont contest it.

sorry, no go. on top of the fine, you got 2 points on your license. judges will just tell you "there are plenty of signs telling you hov is in effect during that time".

sucks i know, but its how it is.

I've never seen this done but it doesn't cost anything to ask the judge. Tell them you are unemployed and see what happens. The most he/she can say is no.

I don't know, I think I'd give it a try! It sounds reasonable to me....but not sure if a judge would do it or would a traffic court judge even know how to to do it?

With community service you're assigned a location and you work a prescribed number of hours to equal the fine owed. The location signs off on the work and it goes back to the court. The judge can do this anytime he wants.

There are no 2 point violations in VA.

Violations carry 3, 4, or 6 points.

A second or subsequent HOV violation gets you 3 points.

Hello all I'm back. The judge was a she (ahem sexism, ahem).

Anyways I opted for the Fines Options Program. My total was $125 and $62 in court costs = $187 @ $15 per hour = 13 hours owed. Basically I'm going to lose my Saturday and (part?) of my Sunday. Eh.

I find it funny that they Credit you twice minumum wage for what I'm sure will be "warm body" work. Even the local county tacitly acknolowdges that minimum wage isn't worth it.

Glad you went to court JDub8! Sounds like it all worked out, even though court costs were added (darn....they've increased since the last time I went to court)....at least you got the community service instead of the 'fine'.

nova has cracked down on hov violators. so on the first hov violation you do get points on your license.

ive seen so many cars pulled over during the afternoon rush hour at the route 7 exit ramps, its not even funny.
