Safety shouldn't be an issue for you there except for the traffic maybe so be careful crossing the street. However, if you have a concern you can call the Alexandria Police Department and they'll give you expert advice.

For better or worse, the arrival of the new townhomes, condos and apartments in North Old Town comes at the cost of tearing down some of the public housing units there. Ironically, some of the existing public housing (east of Washington St.) sits next to some of the most expensive houses in the city near the waterfront. I'd suggest visiting the newish Charles Houston Community Center where you can get to know your new neighbors from all walks of life. You'd be amazed at what a simple "hello" can do.

I might not suggest stumbling home from the Braddock Road Metro at 2 in the morning...but otherwise you should be fine. If anything, whatever issues the remaining public housing residents would have would be with each other.

It's a great neighborhood. I used to live a block away from there. You're within walking distance of nice restaurants like Rustico and Vaso's kitchen. Theres also close bus stops that'll take you to Braddock Station if you dont want to walk or to Pentagon.

shapattack,

I live in the neighborhood and can vouch for its safety. As others have said, this part of Old Town has transformed considerably in the last few years, and continues to transform with more redevelopment projects in the pipeline.

Also keep in mind that in addition to some of the businesses in the immediate area, you are within a convenient walking distance to King Street, and a short bike ride/car ride to Del Ray.

Welcome!
