I guess if I were your shoes I would at least look at TH's south of the Toll Rd. At a minimum you would feel you made an informed choice and compared and contrasted what you get for your money/time.

A friend of mine bought a SFH in Franklin Farms just for the location. Her office is close but she also needs to get to clients that are in Reston, Herndon, Leesburg, Tysons, Arlington, etc. The house was not in the best of shape and their putting money into it, but she feels it's well worth it since she plans on being there for a very long time. I didn't see any TH's currently for sale in that neighborhood and don't know what they go for.

Yes, I am open to those areas as well but I haven't found anything semi comparable to what I can get in Ashburn. Most units that do correspond to what I am looking for are condos and I'd rather get a town home than a condo.

Default Route 7 planned widening

For those trying to determine the best routes for their commutes when looking for houses in or around Ashburn, be aware that for awhile, during upcoming planned construction of additional lanes eastbound and westbound on Route 7 from Reston Avenue to Jarrett Valley Drive (near Tysons Corner), between March 2019 through late 2025 (if they don't stretch things out interminably like they normally try to do) the route 7 corridor will be a nightmare for 6+ years. If commuting to anywhere east of Herndon may require the added expenses of taking the metro or paying to use the Dulles toll road. No problem except possible backups to be expected if you end up working somewhere between Leesburg and Herndon, but for those travelling east to Tysons or beyond for their jobs and trying to avoid the toll road, this won't be pretty--you might ask your employers to consider paying part of the additional commuting fares if that becomes a burden. The government employers used to do that for those working in DC., but I don't know if they still subsidize the metro fares for employees now.

Another possibility is to shift work hours if allowed. When I used to work in (McLean second shift) I noticed that there were rush hours for each of the common daily shift times occurring along route 7. One was from 6-9 AM going, one for 2-4 PM going, one from 3-6 returning west, and one from 9-11 PM coming back west on 7.

I agree with you SHH > TH > Condo in general.

If you can get a SFH in Ashburn I am not sure why you would not with your commute.

Also I believe there are commuter busses from Ashburn to DC if you even have to work in DC.

I personally would not move that far out, but if I did I would be looking into a commuter bus as opposed to driving.
