I'm planning to plant a container garden with tomatoes and cukes on my balcony this spring. Not being from VA originally, I don't have any experience with this impending cicada scenario. Will the cicadas eat my plants?

This will be my first time attempting to grow veggies, but I have visions of thousands of cicadas on my balcony eating my plants! Accurate...or have I been watching too many horror movies??

I'm about to start a vegetable garden too and I was wondering the same thing.

You both will be fine - they don't eat leaves, they only eat sap - and don't live very long.

However, cicada KILLERS eat (over an extended period of time) cicadas, and THEY =love= to build their "nests" in your gardens.

If you see something like this:

or this:

in your yard/garden, then there's an excellent chance you have something like this:

inside there.

Interestingly enough, and as that last image shows, these HUMONGOUS wasp-like killers of cicadas are not interested in wasting their precious venom on you - but they sure are scary on first sight (sort of like carpenter bee males, appearing like bumble bees but not, who put on a noisy threatening display but actually can't even sting you)

You are definitely watching too many horror movies. Cicada's are noisy, and if there are huge bunches of them, you will certainly notice, but they aren't going to eat everything in sight. If you are worried about damage being done to your vegetables, there are nets, and other types of covers that can offer some protection from other garden pests. But, Cicada's are the least of your worries...

Cicada are a pain for the gardener. Mostly in the noisy and gross category, what I find particularly gross is happy dogs eating cicadas till they puke.
