Hi all,

we're planning a move to the area and we're deciding on whether to live in Herndon or Reston. We have a middle schooler and would like to get some feedback on Herndon Middle vs. Hughes Middle (in Reston).

Thanks!

Only things I could tell you are that the two schools are fairly similar in terms of demographics and size (each has about 950 students); Hughes MS is adjacent to South Lakes HS in Reston, whereas Herndon MS is on a separate campus about two miles from Herndon HS in Herndon; and Hughes MS participates in the International Baccalaureate "Middle Years Program" (South Lakes is an IB high school), while Herndon MS does not (Herndon HS offers AP rather than IB courses).

Maybe this will keep the thread alive until someone with direct knowledge of either school weighs in.

Also, in case you weren't aware, not all of Reston goes to Hughes MS and not all of Herndon goes to Herndon MS. For example, part of North Reston goes to Herndon MS or Cooper MS, and part of Herndon goes to Carson MS or Franklin MS. You always need to check the exact address to know the assigned public schools in Fairfax County. There is a "boundary locator" on the FCPS web site that allows you to do so:

http://boundary.fcps.edu/boundary/

In addition, maps of the current school boundaries in FCPS can be found at: http://www.fcps.edu/fts/planning/maps/index.shtml
