...he said he had buyers lined up trying to find a place in Reston. Is the market really that hot? My townhouse is nothing to write home about. It seemed really weird to me that he would be driving around asking that question to a complete stranger.

I have done that for buyers who are interested in living in a specific neighborhood, but you can reach more people with a letter to everyone in the area. It could also be that he really didn't have a buyer for the area but was looking for a house to list. And yes, the market is really that hot.

Not surprising they're trying to drum up some houses to list. Realtors must love this market. Houses on barely sit on the market at all and then they're on to the next one.

My wife and I have received letters from Realtors via USPS that have given specific names of clients (was a bit surprising!) interested in our house; we've also recently received letters taped to the front door from individuals looking to buy without a Realtor. Our home ain't exactly splendiferous, but I guess the location is okay ...

We got a letter here in Chapel Hill from a Realtor in Vienna saying he had clients looking in our neighborhood. I don't know if he just went to the Fairfax County tax records and picked out those families whose mailing address was different than the property address or what. I don't know how else he could have gotten my address here in North Carolina!

Yes, I got one of those last week for my rental in Manassas. They choose these houses because a lot of landords might not really want to be landlords but were forced to rent their places out for various reasons and so might be willing to get rid of it.

My guess is that the county sells access to these records to a service that investors/realtors buy access to. No way they would just poke around the tax records looking for ones with owners at a different address.

In Fairfax County (and I'm pretty sure the surrounding counties as well) you can look up the property information for any address that will show the owner's name and mailing address. it wouldn't be very hard to search a street name and then work through the listings to find an out of town owner.
