We have a larger townhome, and got the AC compressor, AC coils and furnace replaced (cheaper by the bundle) all for about $5,2000. Carrier unit, but not their high-end since we didn't need it. But still better than the York we had.
I hope you had an extra zero there by mistake

I just had to replace my upstairs AC. My husband had "friends" in the business. While they did make some money of the deal, he did get soem sort of break. It was an attic installation so their was extra labor involved and it ran about $5,000 but it is a smaller unit that what would work in a whole house since i have dual zone. I don't think $7,000 sounds unreasonable. It never hurts to get a few extra quotes though.

you could probably save 20% by waiting until the end of the cooling season; as opposed to the beginning. If you need financing, you will not only be paying the 14+% interest, but the base cost will be inflated by 30%, kind of like the used car dealers.

Yes, though the comma was at least correct - it's $5,200.

And of course our A/C went out in the middle of August, so who knows how much lower the price might have been had we done it in November or something.

I'm with Bigfoot424 on this. Get at least three quotes from highly rated companies. Try to see that they're installing similar equipment so that you can compare apples to apples. HVAC companies have overhead just like everyone else, and three quotes should give you an idea of what a reasonable price is for this area. I've learned the hard way that I'd rather pay a little more up front for equipment installed right the first time and good after-sales service.
