I dont see mention of the tornado that hit Fairfax city, woodson high school in sept 1979. This was in tropical storm David. Pretty bad on the street next to the high school and football field. Not as severe as April 1973 at the same location. I was in woodson when it hit early in the evening. We didnt know what was happening. By the time we got outside it was all over. The damage to the cars and the really torn up houses along the side street it was apparent it was a tornado.

Are there normally tornados within tropical storms and hurricanes? I thought the wind from the storms, alone, causes the damage.

Yes, hurricanes and tropical storms do produce tornadoes.

As with other such large-scale natural disasters as floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, volcanoes, sink holes, and forest fires, tornadoes are simply not a significant concern in NoVa. We enjoy a relatively low level of risk regarding all such calamities here. Just another of the many pluses for the region.
