We originally got EZ Pass for our cars years ago when we lived in Rhode Island. We've moved several times since then and have simply changed our address (which I understood as being allowed and recommended by EZ Pass RI).

Fast forward to our current location here in Nova. Our family has expanded so now we have a minivan and I would like to get a Flex Pass transponder for it. The web sites for the VA and RI EZ Pass make no mention of transferring from other states. I'd like to keep our same account since we have auto replenishment, etc and everything set up on it. But I can't see a way to do that.

Am I really going to have to go through all the trouble of returning the two existing transponders, closing that account, having a check mailed to me, and opening a new account here in VA? As well as purchase three new transponders? Ouch $$. (I only need one Flex Pass). Or do I just maintain two accounts?

Just hoping for some insight from someone that has maybe been through this? Thanks!

I think two accounts since you only need the Flex one on the Express Toll Lanes. The rest of the time you can just use the other one. However, if the fees are cheaper then just close the RI and open a new account in VA. That's what I think from reading about EZ Passes. I don't actually have one.

You can't transfer between states. If you decide to go from RI EZ Pass to VA EZ Pass, you will indeed have to return the RI ones and get new VA ones.

That said if the RI ones don't have a fee, I see nothing wrong with just maintaining two accounts.

I can't tell you either way. We came from iL and their ez pass setup (I-Pass). Same concept. Sometimes it worked here. Sometimes it didn't. Replaced it va.

That being said, I do have one strong piece of advice to share, from experience. When you get the va pass, make sure you don't have the RI pass in the car too. True story, got my va pass, swapped it out where the IL pass was located on my windshield. Tossed the IL pass in the front pocket of my bag and didn't think abut it for weeks.....until I got the credit card bill. Wouldn't you know it, I was paying double tolls for a month, on the greenway no doubt! Reader was picking up my il pass through the windshield as my bag rides in the passenger seat on my commute, and it was obviously picking up the new va pass on the windshield.

I think you can wrap the one not being used in aluminum foil and it won't be a problem. Again, that's what I heard, not from experience.

Looks like the question was answered, but I wanted to add a bit of advice for EZ Pass from another state too.

I have my EZ pass from Delaware. I've had it for years. In the past month, I suddenly wasn't able to pay at the Bay Bridge. When I called EZ pass, they told me to bring the transponder to their service desk in Delaware. Now, that wasn't a problem for me at all since I drive though Delaware a lot. But still, I couldn't take it locally to be looked at.

So that might be a potential problem if you run into issues (like a low battery or other technical problem). Then again, you might be able to mail them your EZ Pass or something. I really didn't ask since I opted to take mine to them in person. It might be worth looking into what you might need to do for service before making a final decision.

You could also use the bag the EZ-Pass comes with. It won't read through that bag.
