It's different for motor vehicles. The sales tax increases from 3% to 4%.

So the rest of Virginia pays 5.3% but NOVA will be raised to 6%? That irks, but this may irk even more.

Imposes a real estate transfer tax of 0.25 percent, termed a “regional congestion relief fee,” for land or property transfers in the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority area.
This will add over $1,000 more to the sale of every home in the area. What gives?

So this brings the sales tax on par with Maryland? I think it's already 6% in MD.

I thought conservative governments were supposed to lower taxes? This guy is just shifting a greater burden on us to pay for RoVa...

Wow I had missed that. Closing costs already take a huge chunk out of real estate transactions, and now we're expected to pay $1K - $2K more?? Where do they think we are, Long Island?

All so the gas tax could be lowered instead of correctly raised to project to inflation that has happened since its last update over a decade ago.

Sad

People complain about the gas tax, but they had no idea what amount they were actually paying towards it (because most people are lazy or lack basic arithmetic capabilities).

If a person drove a car that gets about 20mpg (the most common vehicle type), for 8000 miles per year (the average in this area), the spent $70 per year on gas tax.

The whole notion that the gas tax was hurting consumers is ridiculous considering they had no problem hurting consumers by adding a tax that most consumers in NOVA will feel on the order of $150 ON TOP of the existing sales tax.

But by all means, keep subsidizing over sized fuel inefficient vehicles... evidently thats how Virginia does now and days.

Ideally.

But we don't really have a conservative gov't. Bob McDonnell is just another big gov't repub who pretended to be a conservative to scam the voters.
