There is live music in Herndon on the lawn on Friday nights in the summer. It's very family friendly. herndonrocks.com

The area around old town Herndon is also worth considering to live. My wife and I just moved here from downtown Baltimore. We wanted to preserve a little bit of the urban lifestyle where the streets aren't cul-de-sacs and you can walk to restaurants and events. Being next to the W&OD trail is a big bonus.

Thanks cdmurphy for all the suggestions, we'll be sure to hit some of them.

Dill thanks for heads up on Herndon, they have one school I'm considering, McNair, just need to get into the right middle school high school cluster to make it work for us. Seems like Herndon doesn't get good feedback on this forum, kinda scared us away. But we'll take a look for ourselves this weekend.

Michgc, thanks for heads up on bagel spots, we also really enjoy nice non-chain breakfast & brunch options for diners and restaurants.

Any suggestions or websites I can check for activities this Sunday and eventually beyond. We used to use mommypoppins.com for activities in NYC and surrounding area, I'm sure we could dig something up, but if any of you have some that you currently use, it would be appreciated.

Gotta say I'm very grateful with all the input, thanks!

I used to live down the street from McNair ES. I didn't care for those neighborhoods because they felt like parking lots with houses on them. It was so soulless that it caused me to flee the suburbs for a few years. My biggest complaint was a lack of walking and biking routes. But I will give it credit for being the most convenient place I've ever lived for a car based lifestyle.

If you are in the market for a townhouse < $2500 you will find a ton of newer townhouses for rent in McNair farms. It's the easiest place to find rentals around here. The same money will get you an older house in Reston with less inventory to choose from. But you'll get more nature and character in Reston. Tradeoffs...

Cdmurphy that dullesmom.com website is exactly what we're looking for thanks! Want to show the kids a good experience in NoVa going to take them to the watering hole, and check that out.
JfromReston, the patch is really good too thanks!

Regarding our hunt for a rental, Reston is out for now. Seems that Hunters Woods is phasing out AAP and moving to magnet school.

My focus has shifted to Fairfax city, Vienna, Falls Church and reconsidering Herndon for McNair. The schools there are really awesome, and since I'm making the move gotta make it worth it regarding academic program. The towns seem nice I trust the communities are as well.

Personally, I'd suggest looking for a house near a school with the IB program. Doesn't every elementary school have honors classes? Anyhow, I know IB made a much bigger difference in my life than any of my elementary honors classes. As much as I hated IB, it made college a cakewalk.

You really can't go wrong with any school in Fairfax County.

P.S. It's laughable to say anywhere in NOVA is better than NYC.

Updating, we're in NoVa, got here Friday, first observation TRAFFIC! You guys weren't lying... Wow..

Other than we like it here, many nice communities and can definitely see ourselves living here, we noticed lots of diversity in Reston and Fairfax city.

Lots of options in Fairfax, actually like it more than Reston.

And I'm not as bullish and hellbent on finding a place strictly based on an AAP center, lessened learned there! I figured that my 3rd grader will get into the nearest AAP center then I'd work with that school to allow my 1st grader to attend based on a sibling transfer.

Again thanks for all the positive posts, especially those regarding keeping an open mind when chosing a place. Based on the dullesmom.com and weather permitting we're going to hit Ticonderoga Farm to give the kids a nice experience.

Let you guys know where we end up once we decide, ultimately I'm convinced that NoVa will be great place to live.
