Plants are for long term erosion control. They are useless for short term drainage control other than holding the dirt in place to keep them from being washed away. You will absolutely need to figure out a way to divert water away from where you don't want it to flow. You typically do this in one of two ways: gravity, or powered pump. Gravity is of course the preferred solution - create grades and drainage trenches to divert water away. One effective thing to do is to bury perimeter PVC pipes around the house and connect all gutter down spouts directly to the pipe. The perimeter PVC pipe then drains out somewhere else away from the home.

Yes, I was confused about your roof. You hopefully have gutters on two opposite sides of your house and need to make sure the water keeps flowing away from the house.

Indeed, we do. (And I'm constantly cleaning them.)

I think we'll just have to have some regrading done. I can tell the ground is saturated.

You might look into something that keeps your gutters from getting debris in them. We put on gutter glove and it has worked well. We have a willow oak and holly that shed leaves on the front roof and a tulip poplar in the back.

Thanks; the previous owner left behind a stack of plastic covers from Home Depot; I keep meaning to install them but keep putting it off.
