Fairfax City also offers you some options ...

What Metro stop is your husband's work near? If it's on the Red or Green Lines, I'd look at Maryland. You have tons of options up and down I-270.

I did a search on Robinson, Lake Braddock and West Springfield HS districts - there were a couple houses that looked like they were worth seeing.

There was also one in the South County HS area just a bit further south in Lorton. I pass that area on the way to my friend's house, and I really like it.

If you're willing to come out to Chantilly area, we live in Greenbriar off of 50 and Fairfax County Parkway. I think you can still get a couple of the house models for $450Kish. I really like our neighborhood - it has a Brady Bunch feel to it. Close to lots of amenities, walking distance to all 3 levels of school and the library. As a parent, you can't ask for a much better set up.

I do wish you luck - feel free to ask questions here. People are very helpful on this board.

There are a couple houses in my neighborhood, but I recommend you look up this listing: FX8114739. It is in the Lees Corner ES boundaries (right across Rt 50 from us), and the owners have obviously put a lot into this house. It looks lovely, and I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

You should definitely be able to meet that budget for a SFH in Herndon. I have friends with young kids in Herndon, so I know the elementary schools aren't all bad (look into specific ones, obviously, when you're looking at homes). If you're looking for public transportation, your husband could take the new Metro from Reston later this year.

There should be lots housing that fits your price range. Mt Vernon area, Springfield and Annadale have a wide variety of housing that could fill your needs. Good luck.

You can also look at the I-66 route. You get good bang for your buck homewise in Gainesville and Bristow and they have really good schools too.

I've also been looking in Fairfax county with young children. I have been using SchoolDigger.com - School Rankings, Reviews and More - Public and Private Elementary, Middle, High Schools to investigate elementary and middle schools.

Good luck!

You can get an older TH in Oakton for 450K. Or SFH in Herndon. As others have stated, housing prices have gone up 10% in the last two years for homes below 600K in the area.

You do not want to commute past Manassas if you have to go into DC. Better options closer in.
