I usually take the metro to work everyday from this station, and it is never full. I have not tried to go downtown on July 4th before, though. I've got family from out of town who want to go see the fireworks. Will we be able to find parking at the station in the late afternoon?

Many thanks.

It will be iffy. The 4th of July is the busiest day of year for metro. Plus there is an afternoon Nationals game.

No way would I ever, ever go into DC on the 4th. Good luck!

Oh! Unless your family wants to actually experience being IN DC for the fireworks, there are places in Alexandria you can go to see them. Gravelly Point Park or the Masonic Temple to name a couple.

You may be able to get some good deals on hotel rooms and just make a staycation out of it. We have arranged for doing just that instead of dealing with the crowded metro. I don't mind it so much, but with a toddler, she will probably not be a happy camper after a few minutes, so we are really hoping that our decision to stay in DC will be worthwhile.

Yeah, I'm kind of dreading it as I have a 3 year old, but I think they really want to be in DC. Heck, even when I lived in DC, I went to Rosslyn to watch the fireworks! Gravelly point is a good idea. I wonder how early we'd need to get there?
And the person who suggested the Masonnic temple, do people go sit on the hill up there?

I second the staying in DC. We have done that 3-4 times. We walk around during the day, head back to the hotel to shower, get a nice dinner, wander back to the Mall, watch the fireworks, wander back. Great! No stress with finding a place in the dirt (mud this year to sit) no need to drag chairs blankets etc.

If the Metro garage is full, keep in mind that the Springfield Mall parking garage also allows commuter parking.

Yes, on the hill and the steps to the temple.

Thanks, all! We ended up scrapping those plans, and went to FFX high school instead. It was great!
