I received an e-mail today that states that I can appeal my furlough. A number of folks in my office have started the process. Have any of you heard something else related to this matter?

I have heard its nearly impossible in this situation because you have to show that you were treated differently from others without cause. Given that everybody got furloughed, I don't see how you could win. Saw a WaPo article on this a few months back, Ill try and find it.

EDIT: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...few-might-win/ You would have to prove discrimination or retaliation, which is hard to do when the whole office is out.

There are certain positions that can be exempted from furlough. If you feel that you were furloughed but should have been exempted based on those positions that were exempted then you can appeal. For instance, I am exempted because my salary is not paid with appropriated funding. If they had furloughed me, I would have appealed because my type of funding is listed on the exemption list.

I do know that some offices are encouraging their employees to appeal just to bog down the system. Your furlough letter would have given you a number of reasons that you *could* appeal. Do you fit one of those conditions?

Originally, I was told that working capital fund employees were exempted but that's not the case.

They tried to get the exemption but it didn't pass.
