What are the waves like in Destin, etc? Part of my beach experience is swimming in the ocean, jumping the waves, and body surfing them in. I have found the farther south I go, the wimpier the waves get.

I'm not really sure how someone thinks there's more to do in OBX than the DE beaches. I think that's the appeal of OBX - it's less developed and some people like the more "natural" vibe. I think there's a tendency to overstate how many people visit OBX because so many of them buy those stickers for their car (no idea why).

The Gulf Coast beaches are nicer than the ones near here, but if I'm going to spend the money and effort to fly, I'd rather just go to the Caribbean.

For me, I like Rehoboth because there's lots to do and plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. The beach itself is not that great, but I like going to the beach for the "beach atmosphere" as much as the beach itself.

If I were a multi-billionaire, I would buy up several miles of shore land south of Mt Vernon and redevelop it into a beach.

Otherwise, has anyone here been to Chesapeake Beach? It's the nearest beach and you don't need to cross the Bay Bridge to get there.

I was there this past weekend. It was crowded. Of course if you are not camping there you could walk down the beach a long ways for the empty beach but its a walk.

Sort of whimpy..I grew up "surfing" there as did my brothers, then one of them moved to Hawaii, wake up call. But it is usually pretty safe and consistant type of surf, safer if you have kids. That being said one of the things I like best about FL - aside from the white sand, is the fact that you have other choices, windsurfing and sailing on the calmer bays, kayaking in the bayou, canoeing down the numerous rivers. Alot more fishing charters, as well as bigger boat charters. And there is easy access to great dining, cheap dining and everything in between. I found that hard to find on the "strip beaches" like VB and OC. You seem to get either snobby areas or low budget, I don't see too many areas that offer all sorts of stuff within easy reach of each other. And Shrimp... can't forget the shrimp - right off the boat....

None of the above...I'm really not a beach person. I have family that lives in Virginia Beach, so we commute there frequently but don't actually go to the oceanfront. I absolutely hate the drive and wouldn't put my family through it for a "vacation."

Jilly - to be fair, I don't really like beaches for vacations anymore either. I have too many other places I'd like to see, honestly. But, since we can't really afford them at this moment...

My husband was being "encouraged" to take his vacation time by his company for contract finance purposes. He was adamant that we leave town and not just do a "staycation."

Myrtle Beach or Miami Beach.

Better family atmosphere in Myrtle Beach. Extreme amount of hotties in Miami Beach, half naked.

OC is horrible.

We're getting an awful lot of NoVA residents here on the Chesapeake. At the beginning of the summer nearly 1/2 of our weekly total were from there (Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria). Since then the raw numbers have stayed the same but the percentage of total has dropped.
