I've used a few different companies over the years and I like Stanley Steemer the best.

For the price of a one-time service, you can buy a Bissell steam cleaner and use it whenever you want! I did this back in 2003 and haven't looked back since. They're simply fantastic machines and can be used to clean furniture, throw pillows, and your car. I'm on my 3rd in 10 years - first one died via fall down the stairs, second one died when I lost a key piece of a seal while cleaning it incorrectly. I have two little kids, two cars, 3 cats and have used it to clean a total of nearly 11,000 square feet of living space in four different homes. Bought a used car once. After the cleaning chemicals from the dealership wore off, I quickly realized the previous owner was a smoker. Tried all of the usual tricks to get the smell out. Put the Bissell hand-held to the car, and was simply stunned at what came out of that car. The car looked new when we bought it, or so I thought. The dirty water looked like a mixture of hot chocolate and coffee, I kid you not! Car was flawless from that point forward, and no hint whatsoever of that distgusting smoke smell. Have had white carpet in all of my houses over the past 10 years. Not a single stain on any of them. Twice a year, I put the Bissell to them with nothing more than hot water, and they come back to new. No odors (note the 3 cats above), no stains (note the 2 kids above as well). I'll never spend the money on a professional service again. In fact, I put the Bissell to a room that had been professionally cleaned a few weeks prior. Just using hot water, the dirty water coming up was dissappointing to see. Pulled up all of that chemical residue left over from the professional cleaner. Carpet went from stiff and stale, to soft, fluffy and fresh. Seriously, I'd give the Bissell a look before you hire someone. They're around $250 +/-. They've got one that acts as both an upright and a detachable hand held (I've got that one now). I love it!

Did the do-it-yourself route for years - got tired of spending my whole day cleaning my carpets. I don't know if they use steam or whatever, but I use Absoluet Carpet and they do a great job.

Same here, but I have a Hoover Steamvac. Much better job than when we used professionals. Plus, cleaner (some of the machines the pros use are filthy). But if I had a real lot of carpet to do, I probably wouldn't want to do it myself.
