There's a code we have to put on our timesheets that basically says "no workee - no pay"

Christine, interesting!
I'm applying all over back east. My resume is awesome!

There have been many shutdowns since the 1970. Every year of the Carter administration had a shutdown, or two. Nothing much happened and government employees all got paid, eventually.

The speculation is that this time, given all the ugliness we've seen, there won't be back pay. That is going to hurt, especially for folks that were already furloughed earlier this year.

Foreign Military Sales financial analysts. Must have "expert" knowledge of foreign military sales policies.

No kidding, right. I was joking about this with my wife, about how I couldn't just go to the local Starbucks or whatever to apply. When they ask where you see yourself in five years, what do you say? "Hell, in five days, I'll probably quit and be back at my job?"

Anyway, I can't complain too much compared to many, this is just coming at an odd time for my wife and I. I'm a GS-13 and she has a good job in the private sector in the social work/counseling field. We don't have a lot of savings however, less than one month's worth. That's for two reasons...one, she recently cut her hours back so she could go back to school and get her Master's Degree...two, daycare in this area is expensive, our two kids cost four figures per month combined and the first number isn't a 1.

Our savings is my TSP account, which has grown nicely over the last few years, but borrowing against it isn't something I want to do. I'm hoping this is a relatively quick thing; I really enjoy my job and actually take pride serving the country in my own small way. I'd like to be allowed to do so and have Congress stop their slap-fighting.

Hey, I feel your pain!!! I am a GS-14 and my husband is a union electrician. Between us, we make very good money; however, we have all the expenses of a 4-person family in the DC area (and I haven't been a GS-14 for long). Anyway, I was very "proud" that I am able to send my two kids to college without student loans. My oldest is in her senior year and my youngest just started this past August. Having two kids in at the same time, has pretty much depleted my savings. I always knew it would happen and the crunch would only be for a year while both of them are in at the same time, but still, this year I am living right on that edge. This pending loss of pay is really going to hurt me.

Hey if there is a silver lining to your situation at least you can look at it like this is hopefully the worst it will get. By next year, you will only have to pay for one child in college, and hopefully the government becomes more stable.

You're right, and like Christine, I don't want to come off as complaining about my situation too much, I know I have it better than many. But it seems like, if you read comments sections on WaPo and other news outlets, there's this perception that Federal Employees are all living high off the hog. We're comfortable in so much that we can afford daycare, afford our mortgage, but there isn't much left over afterwards.

Yeah it is not easy. That is one of the reasons I left government. I have a similar situation to you where I have a couple of kids so daycare is huge issue. It also limitswhat wives can do for work because unless they make a certain amount, the daycare expenses are usually more than their salary depending on their field. I just couldn't afford it with the furloughs and the possibility of being RIF'ed.
