yeah, not sure why anyone would limit the search for the best lawyer by geography. You're looking for the best....drive the extra 15 minutes.

Random and unhelpful comments, for which I apologize in advance:

I don't know one person that came away from their divorce liking their attorney. And the bills, watch out. I've seen friends paying for those Washingtonian attorneys (at $675 an hour or $375 for the junior attorney on staff) and the only thing they had to show for it was a bigger bill than what I had.

The same people (above) also did not listen to their attorney, for which they paid thru the nose for representation and advice.

If you are going to ignore someone, keep the bill low. But if I wanted to bring a gun to a knife fight, I would hire David Duff in Fairfax. Other attorneys cringe when they hear his name. I know I wish I had started there.

I am back. I decided against it for awhile and am now ready to seek an initial consulation.

Appreciate all the suggestions. Note, as I stated in my first post, this is for an initial consultation to learn about the process - not for representation. If/when it comes time to hire an attorney for real representation, I am going to spend alot of time researching attorneys and location won't be as big a deal. Obviously, mediation will be my first approach... if it goes there.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I do appreciate it.

Just make sure that your other half/soon to be "ex" is also on board with counseling/mediation because if they are not, you can spend a lot of money on that as well with no results. My ex-wife cost me a ton of money because she was so unreasonable when it came to everything. She went through 3 attorneys because I came to find out they had a hard time dealing with her. While things may start out good between the both of you, they can change in a heartbeat! Pay the money to have a good attorney on retainer. JMHO
