Hello folks,

I'm looking for a venue to celebrate a baby shower for 70-75 people. I would prefer to stay within 10 miles from Alexandria. I would appreciate any input you guys can provide.

Budget? Are you looking for a room, or full catering?

I'm looking for a room. I can't tell you a budget at the moment because I have no idea how much this could cost.

The quickest way to get a starting point is to put the info into Open Table and see what restaurants show up having spaces large enough to host that sort of crowd.

I do know, from speaking with one of the owners, that Osteria Marzano (between Alexandria and Springfield, near Kingstowne) doesn't regularly open for lunch on Sundays, but might work with you as a private opening for a group of that size.

As far as just a room and then you bring in your own foods, unless you have access to using the community room at an apartment or condo complex, I don't have any ideas, sorry.

If you just want a room, I agree that your best bet is a community center. Otherwise, you're basically looking for a wedding reception venue. That could cost up to thousands of dollars to rent the space for a few hours. The local parks and rec departments could offer a more budget-minded option if they have spaces large enough.

Another option is if the mom-to-be (or you) have a church, they may rent out the hall to church members for a super discounted rate.

Do people around here use fire halls for gatherings? Where I'm from, people hold EVERYTHING at the fire hall. Wedding reception, baby shower, bridal shower, birthday party. That or a hunt club. Then again, I'm from Pennsyltuckey.

Apparently you can! I've never heard of this before, but I just googled the Burke Fire Station and this was on their website:

Burke Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, Inc.

Looks like even that is $1000 for a weekend slot though. Good reminder to myself to keep bridal/baby showers to <20 people so they can fit in a house

Marco Polo in Vienna is a catering place. It serves food (Italian) but they can handle a big crowd, so that might be an option.
