breaking news: Senator Creigh Deeds was repeatedly stabbed this morning. Struck in the head and torso; his 24-year-old son was fatally wounded by a gunshot.

What a tragedy, he was a politician I actually liked.

Apparently from the Politics forum, he was stabbed by his son and the son shot himself afterwards.

I'm betting the son had untreated schizophrenia--as did the Navy Yard shooter and (I believe) the Va. Tech shooter.

I heard on NPR tonight that the day before, Deeds had taken his son before a magistrate trying to get a court-ordered stay in a psychiatric treatment center but there wasn't a bed available to take him. Deeds' condition has been upgraded and he's expected to make a full recovery and will probably be released from the hospital tomorrow or the next day.

It's a shame they could not accommodate his son. Very sorry to hear this happening to him.

The state of emergency psychiatric medicine and psychiatric medicine as a whole is a travesty. If we don't start making mental health a priority we will continue to see these kind of things happen. The first thing we can start doing as a State is to start teaching young people about mental illness. Remove the stigma that mentally ill people are just crazy. A person with bipolar disorder is just as ill as someone with diabetes.

This adds a new twist to this:

Three hospitals with psychiatric units had room for Deeds’s son on Monday - The Washington Post

Now, did they not call these places because they felt too far away, or did the family refuse to go that far? Bath County is out in no where so any place will be a distance. The finger pointing will be interesting.

as with anything healthcare related, it is a gigantic clusterf&%$ minefield to try to navigate your own care. There is never a simple answer and you don't know what you don't know. Who knows why they didn't call the hospitals that had beds - maybe they didn't realize it was an option? Maybe it wasn't showing in some system? Who knows. And to be doing it under stress knowing your adult child is sick?

I will never place any blame until the whole story comes out.

We can't possibly know the entire story. Who knows how bad the son really was, and if anyone had anticipated that he would have done those things. Mental Health is a big concern everywhere, and although some units may have had beds, perhaps they weren't for the condition or level of condition that his son needed help with.

I like others will not point fingers and feel that the public has no business knowing what was happening in this family. It is a tragedy, and one that many others face without being scrutinized. It isn't for gossip, and I find it sick that anyone feels the need to continue any further with this horrible story.
