I'm betting the son had untreated schizophrenia--as did the Navy Yard shooter and (I believe) the Va. Tech shooter.

I heard on NPR tonight that the day before, Deeds had taken his son before a magistrate trying to get a court-ordered stay in a psychiatric treatment center but there wasn't a bed available to take him. Deeds' condition has been upgraded and he's expected to make a full recovery and will probably be released from the hospital tomorrow or the next day.

The state of emergency psychiatric medicine and psychiatric medicine as a whole is a travesty. If we don't start making mental health a priority we will continue to see these kind of things happen. The first thing we can start doing as a State is to start teaching young people about mental illness. Remove the stigma that mentally ill people are just crazy. A person with bipolar disorder is just as ill as someone with diabetes.

as with anything healthcare related, it is a gigantic clusterf&%$ minefield to try to navigate your own care. There is never a simple answer and you don't know what you don't know. Who knows why they didn't call the hospitals that had beds - maybe they didn't realize it was an option? Maybe it wasn't showing in some system? Who knows. And to be doing it under stress knowing your adult child is sick?
