We are considering to move to Burke Centre. How long is the commute from there to the State Department area leaving at 8:00 AM if one is allowed to drive on the I-95/I-395 HOV-3 lanes? How long does it take returning at 5:30 PM? Do you know of anybody commuting by motorcycle?

The trip on HOV 3 should be 15 minutes. That does not count your time getting to the HOV3 nor does it count your time once you hit the 14th Street Bridge. 8AM is PEAK rush hour here so the times before getting on the HOV lanes and the times right after you get off HOV3 are going to be your biggest drag.

I've had the misfortune of having to go into DC later than my usual time (6AM) and I am always amazed at the "crawl" right after you pass the Pentagon in both HOV and regular lanes. At that point the HOV lanes are open to everyone so I guess that explains both lanes being slow.

I would just tack on 15 minutes to either end of the HOV ride and estimate that you'll have a 45 minute commute on a normal day.

I think it will take you at least an hour to go from Burke Center to the State Dept at 8am. I believe it could take you up to 20 minutes to get to a HOV lane. There will be school buses running around at that time of day and Terra Center ES will probably have the 25mph lights flashing. If you drive straight up Burke Center Parkway/Old Keene Mill Rd, you eventually will get to an HOV entrance, but you have gone thorough 15 or so lights. if you cut over to Burke Rd or Burke Lake Rd, you will end up on Braddock Rd which is slow. Cutting through Coffer Woods or other neighborhoods won't help if you get stuck behind a school bus.
Once on a HOV lane it should only take you 15 minutes to the district. Then you have to get to the state department I think that will take another 10 minutes on a good day.

I think it will likely be more like 25 minutes from Burke Center to the 395 HOV lanes. I live near Rolling Rd/Burke Road intersection, and it took me 15 minutes today at 11 am to get to 395, with no traffic. There are just a lot of lights. Add in peak rush hour traffic, and it's going to be longer...

So, could an option to speed up getting on the HOV lanes be leaving at 8:30 AM instead of 8:00 AM? Or, 7:30 AM?

Nobody has mentioned the commute in the evening hours. How long would it take leaving at 5:30 PM or 6:00 PM from DC?

I am only familiar with the Burke to 395 route, but for that section leaving anytime between 7:30 and 8:30 is going to be the same. The traffic isn't terrible, it's just that there are a ton of stop lights and intersections. It may take 2 light cycles to get through some of them, but in general it's a pretty consistent commute.

Coming home, OKM backs up in the evenings right when you get off from 395 (near springfield plaza, because you lose lanes) and again near Rolling Road (traffic is usually backed up to Greeley). If you can get through the Rolling Road/OKM intersection before 4:00 it's usually clear. After that it gradually grows until 5:30 or so when it remains pretty busy until around 7.

It's honestly not a bad stretch...it's just that volume + traffic lights means it will never be smooth sailing. You will add ~10 minutes with traffic, but I wouldn't plan around that part. I honestly don't know how bad the second stretch of OKM to Burke Center Parkway would be. It's a bunch more traffic lights, but I don't think there's any lane loss to back things up.

Rush hours around here go to well past 9AM. Most elementary schools are still delivering their kids at 8:30. Later can be better, but later usually equals 10AM. I live in Woodbridge so I don't really know the Springfield times; however, if I leave my house at 9AM, I'm always so shocked at the amount of "local" traffic at that time. I assume Springfield is the same (95 Northbound is usually great at that time, though).

As for evenings, again, traffic doesn't get "good" until about 7PM. I think leaving at 5:30 or 6PM is going to run you the same amount of time for the same reasons.

Also keep in mind that HOV restrictions in the evening end at 6 pm. That means anyone can start using them at 6 pm. It is not uncommon for the entrances to the HOV lanes to start backing up around 6 because there are a good number of people who wait until then specifically so they can use them. In my opinion, the restrictions really should be extended until 7 because rush hour really doesn't end until about 7 in my opinion.

I take this route from Burke to the Pentagon area sometimes by car and sometimes on motorcycle. You're looking at 45-60 minutes round trip in mornings but leaving to return home at 5:30 is what will be the tough part. If there's any way you can adjust your schedule earlier so you can get a jump on rush hour, it will help tremendously. The evening traffic varies so much in density, it's tough to estimate an avg. return trip time.

Best of luck! Keep the shiny side up.
